Getting it right for everyone (GIRFE) has been co-designed by the Scottish Government, health and social care partnerships and the people of Scotland. It will help to shape the design and delivery of health and social care services and ensure that people’s needs are met.

Community based group session

Person-centred approach

GIRFE is a multi-agency support framework that helps adults from young adulthood to end-of-life care. The primary focus is personalised and coherent care across life stages, tailored to individual needs.

It ensures that support is coordinated, person-centred, and based on early intervention to improve health and social care outcomes.

GIRFE builds on existing adult best practice and Getting it Rights for Every Child (GIRFEC) and provides a national practice model to embed inter-agency working. It does not replace the framework for Community Health and Social Care Integrated Services but provides a model to deliver it.

GIRFE in East Ayrshire

In East Ayrshire we put people at the centre of their care, forming multidisciplinary and multi-agency teams around the person. We will follow the five GIRFE principles.

Information icon

Principle 1

People accessing our services have the information they need to make decisions about their life, in a format that works for them, and they are supported to understand what options are available to them, and they are trusted to know what is right for them.

Listening icon

Principle 2

The people who support them take the time to listen to and understand them as a person and communicate in a way that works for them. Their whole life is considered when making decisions about their life.

Respect icon

Principle 3

They know that they can be clear about what matters to them, and they trust that their choices will be respected and taken into account by the people who support them.

Kindness icon

Principle 4

They are treated with kindness, dignity and respect at all times.

Team icon

Principle 5

The people they are involved with work together with them and each other to share relevant information, in a format that is accessible to them, and develop a clear understanding of how to support their wellbeing.

GIRFE has been co-designed by the Scottish Government, Health and Social Care Partnerships, and the people of Scotland. This has included the co-design of a national toolkit, focused on developing a ‘Team around the Person’, which can help support the move towards a person-centred approach to care and support in Scotland.

The Team around the Person Toolkit features principles, tools, guidance, and case studies to support health and social care practitioners, as well as wider support services, to embed the GIRFE approach. The aim is to improve and enhance how people can access and receive care, and provide streamlined support tailored to their needs.
