As the Mauchline Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) enters its final phase, we want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey we’ve shared. Since our journey began, our team has thoroughly enjoyed every moment of supporting the Mauchline community.

From working with local property owners on restoring their historic buildings to collaborating with the pupils from the local schools on our many educational projects, it has been a privilege to witness the passion you all have for our village’s rich heritage. Whether we were installing hanging baskets for the Holy Fair or uncovering secrets at our community

We Need Your Voice: Share Your Feedback

The impact of CARS in Mauchline is now more visible than ever, but our story isn't complete without your perspective. We are currently conducting a final evaluation to understand how these improvements have benefited you and what you hope for the future of the conservation area.

Please take five minutes to complete our short Community Survey, linked below.

Why participate? Your feedback will be included in the final report to Historic Environment Scotland and East Ayrshire Council, helping to shape future funding and regeneration efforts.

Recent Milestone Highlights

  • Building Restorations: Seven building repair projects, have successfully returned historic fabric to its former glory using traditional materials like Scotch slate and lime mortar
  • Heritage Lighting: We’ve recently completed the installation of traditional-style lanterns and columns in the Loudoun Street carpark, improving both the aesthetic and safety of the area at night.
  • Public Realm Improvements: From traditionally styled street signs to bespoke benches, Mauchline CARS has delivered a multitude of improvements to the public spaces of the village. The recent completion of restoration and repair of the Mauchline Parish Church wall and gates, have ensured this prominent structure remains in good condition for the foreseeable future.
  • Education Projects: Since 2019 Mauchline CARS has funded nine educational projects all delivered to local young people at Mauchline and Sorn Primary School and Robert Burns Academy
  • Training Programme: Our traditional skills workshops, covering everything from masonry to signwriting, have helped bridge the local skills gap for a new generation.

All projects were facilitated by Mauchline Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS), jointly funded by East Ayrshire Council and Historic Environment Scotland. Additional funding for public realm improvements was secured from the Place Based Investment Programme (PBIP) and the Renewable Energy Fund (REF), we would like to extend our gratitude to these organisations for their support.

Though the project was due to officially conclude on 31 March 2026, a number of projects are still ongoing, and our commitment to Mauchline's heritage continues. You can still reach us or follow our progress until the final report is published:

  • Mauchline Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) ran from 2019 and will conclude in March 2026.  The overall aim of the scheme was to maximise and sustain the economic potential of Mauchline’s Culture and Heritage assets through:

    •  The restoration and repair of key historic buildings bringing them, where necessary, back into productive and sustainable use;
    • A small grants scheme to enable and encourage private owners to carry out urgent repairs on traditional and older properties;
    • A small grants scheme for shop front improvements;
    • Public realm works;
    • An education and training programme for those involved or wishing to be involved in the traditional construction industry;
    • A programme of community participation and learning to increase people’s understanding and appreciation of heritage.

     This short survey is to gather wider community views on the impact and potential importance of these works to Mauchline.  It should only take a few minutes to complete, and your views are very welcome on helping to assess local views on CARS, and what these may mean for similar projects in future.
