East Ayrshire Council is preparing its third Local Development Plan, LDP3. The first formal stage of LDP3 will be the production of an Evidence Report.

National Planning Framework 4 (NPF4) puts the twin global climate and nature crisis at the heart of its vision. it aims to make sure existing woodlands and trees are protected and cover expanded and that woodlands and trees on development sites are sustainably managed.

Scotland’s Forestry Strategy (2019-2029) sets out the Scottish Government’s vision and priorities related to the expansion of woodland to 2070. The SFS sets out ambitious targets for woodland expansion across Scotland, including: Increasing forest and woodland cover to 21% of the total area of Scotland by 2032 at a rate of 15,000 ha per year from 2024/2025. The LDP has an important role to play in creating nature positive places. The Planning (Scotland) Act 2019 requires planning authorities to prepare a forestry and woodlands strategy for their area.
