Taxi operators met with Council and ARA officers on 16 February 2023 to discuss options for the temporary relocation of the Foregate Taxi Rank. Portland Street was identified as the preferred option for further consideration.

Businesses on Portland Street, statutory consultees and elected members were consulted on the proposals. A site meeting was also held with representatives of The Standing Man on 13 March 2023 following concerns raised about the impact of the temporary rank.

Following consultation, ARA officers reviewed all feedback received from taxi operators, businesses, planning officers, elected members and other stakeholders. Alternative proposals involving Cheapside Street and The Cross were assessed but ultimately discounted due to planning, operational and public safety concerns.

The final report and recommendation were issued on 29 August 2023. The report confirmed that the preferred temporary location for the taxi rank would be on Portland Street north of Croft Street, with taxis entering via West George Street and exiting via Croft Street.

Preliminary demolition works were expected to begin towards the end of 2023, with the main demolition works and taxi rank relocation anticipated in Spring 2024. Taxi operators were to receive at least four weeks' notice before the relocation was implemented.
