Self and custom build housing is defined as homes built or commissioned by individuals or groups of individuals for their own use. Homes built this way, offer an alternative to standard market housing, and the opportunity to create innovative, greener, and more affordable homes than currently offered through standard housing options. It also incorporates wider forms, such as cohousing and housing cooperatives.
The Council and Scottish Government are keen to encourage greater self-build opportunities. However, building a bespoke house, whilst very rewarding, is complex and involves many differing requirements, not least finding suitable and available plots upon which to build.
Our self-build register aims to maintain a publicly available list of people interested in acquiring land for self-build across the area and to identify the needs of self-builders, with a view to connecting interested parties (individuals and groups looking to self-build, developers, and landowners) and is governed under The Town and Country Planning (Scotland) Act 1997 (as amended) (Section 16E).
It is important to note, however, that registration does not guarantee that a suitable plot will be identified or become available.
If you are interested in self-build, please leave your details by completing the survey below. By signing up, you will help us understand the demand for self-build plots across East Ayrshire. Please note that we will publish your surname (or group name) and limited details about your aspirations, the details of which can be seen in the above register. The information provided will be processed strictly in accordance with the administration of the register and in line with the Council's Planning Privacy Policy.
